三嶋大社は、古くから文化・歴史の中心としてまちの中心に鎮座してきました。
多くの人々が、大鳥居をくぐって参道を歩き、境内では季節の細やかな移ろいに心を動かされ、神様に敬意を表してきました。
その神聖な場所は、三島の人々がお宮参りや結婚式・成人のお祝いなど人生の節目に訪れる、世代を超えた心のよりどころとなっています。
ハレノヒVol.2では三嶋大社を再発見することをテーマにしています。朝には神職のみなさんと三嶋大社を管理される方々が一斉に掃除をされる光景を見ましたし、弓道場で見た弓道の稽古は息を飲むほど優雅なものでした。それから、空を見上げて見つけた「猪目（いのめ）」と呼ばれるハート型の建築装飾は、みなさんもきっと気に入ると思います。
Since long before the oldest written records, The Grand Shrine of Mishima has proudly stood at the cultural and historical heart of the city.
Countless visitors have passed through its main gate to walk the worshipper's path, admire the subtle shifts in the season, and pay homage to the resident deities.
Its sacred grounds have been a beacon for generations who have come to celebrate in the ceremonial milestones that punctuate life in Mishima, from newborns to newlyweds, from students to seniors.
In Vol. 2, we set out to rediscover Mishima's Grand Shrine. We watched as the morning caretakers tended to their cleaning, and with held breath, we witnessed the elegant rituals of the Kyudo-Jo. Then, looking toward the sky, we discovered 'Ino Me', a heart-shaped architectural feature that you are sure to love.
ハレノヒVol.2 で取り上げた場所、掲載しきれなかった場所をご紹介します。改めて知る三嶋大社は、襟を正して、姿勢を正して訪れたくなるような場所でした。
古くから建物や小物の装飾に用いられてきた、猪目（いのめ）。ハートマークのような模様です。三嶋大社でもたくさん見つけることができました。
この場所、「お参りする前に水でお清めをするところ」ということは、みなさん何となく知っていると思います。昔はお参り前に全身に水を浴びて身を清める、禊(みそぎ)が行われていました。その禊を簡略化したものが、この手水舎でのお清めです。正しいお作法・順序をここでおさらいしてみましょう。
Most readers probably know that this is where we cleanse ourselves before entering a shrine. But, did you know that long ago, visitors took part in 'Misogi', or a full-body cleansing before entering. We now perform a simplified form of this ritual at this Purification Basin, and here is our chance to review the correct method and order of movements.
1. 右手に柄杓を取り、水を一杯だけ汲ませていただきます。まずはその水で左手をすすぎましょう。
First, pick up the ladle with your right hand, fill it with water from the basin. This one ladle of water should be used to complete all of the following actions so as to not waste any water. Now first, rinse your left hand with some of the water.
2. 柄杓を左手に持ち替えて、次は右手をすすぎます。
Switch the ladle to your left hand, and now rinse your right hand.
3. 再度柄杓を右手に持ち、左手に水を注いだら、その水で口を軽くゆすぎます。水を口から出すときには、そっと手を添えて口元を隠すとよいでしょう。口をゆすぐのは「体の内面を清める」という意味を持っています。
Next, switch hands once again. With the ladle of water now in your right hand, pour some water into your left hand and use this to lightly rinse your mouth. When expelling the water from your mouth, it is best to use your left hand to gently cover your mouth. This action of rinsing the mouth symbolizes the purification of the inside of your body.
4. 最後に柄杓を立てて、残りの水で柄杓の持ち手をすすぎます。
Bring the ladle to the vertical position, allowing the remaining water to run down and rinse the handle. Finally, return the ladle to the Purification Basin.
境内の西側、客殿近くにあるこの場所。ここの水は富士山水系の水を引いたもので、御神水として頂く（飲む）ことができます。まずは水神様にお参りをしてからお水を頂きましょう。
水温は年間を通して変動が少なく、冬でも約12,3度と触るとあたたかいです。
Fed from the melt waters of Mt. Fuji, the water in this spring is potable and is thought to be the water of the gods. The temperature of the water remains at a constant 12-13 degrees Celsius throughout the year and feels warm to the touch even in winter. You can find it located on the west side of the shrine grounds, near the Reception Hall.
参道から外れた東側に弓道場があります。ここで活動する三嶋大社弓道会は、スポーツとして弓道を楽しむことを目的にしているのではなく、毎年1月に行われる奉射祭(ほうしゃさい)や8月の奉納弓道大会などの射手を養成することを目的としています。
厳粛な空気の中、すり足の音・弓を引く音・矢が飛ぶ音・的中の音が静かに響きます。
On the eastern edge of the perimeter, you can find this Kyudo (art of archery) field, and home of the Mishima Taisha Kyudo Society. Here, Kyudo is not a sport, but rather part of an ancient festival held each January and a Kyudo offering and competition held each August. Inside, the atmosphere is focused and dignified while the air is filled with the sounds of drawn bows, arrows in both mid-flight and finding their mark.
普段は見ることのない、毎朝の風景のひとつです。
朝8:30、神職のみなさんが朝の掃除の手を一旦止めて、拝殿に集まって神様に拝みます。
Each and every morning, the priests and staff at Mishima Taisha meticulously sweep and clean the shrine grounds. At precisely 8:30, the priests stop their morning cleaning routine, and in procession, walk to the Hall of Worship for morning worship. This is yet another scene that we often do not have the opportunity to see.
神社や境内を取り囲むように生えている木々、森を社叢と呼びます。三嶋大社の社叢は900本以上もの樹木で形成されており「大社の森」と呼ばれ、人々から親しまれています。
The Sacred Forest or 'Shasou' that surrounds Mishima Shrine is made up of more than 900 mature trees and is well-known to many as Taisha no Mori, The Shrine Forest.
取材中、昔からこの近くに住んでいらっしゃる方にお話をうかがうことができました。
「昔は本殿を囲んでいるフェンスなんてなくて、こどもたちは軒下にまで入って遊んでいたんだよ。かくれんぼをしたり、森の中に小屋を作ったり、三嶋大社はこどもの遊び場だったんだ。」

While visiting Mishima Shrine for one of our Harenohi interviews, we had the opportunity to speak to Suzuki-san who shared with us a memory from his childhood. "When I was a child, there was no fence around the Main Hall or the forest. We would love to climb in the eaves and play hide and seek. We would build huts in the forest…Mishima Taisha was one big playground!"
社務所の北側に茶室がひっそりと佇んでいます。かつて樋口本陣（明治天皇がお泊りになる三島の仮宮）にあったものを、昭和20年代、三嶋大社に移設したもの。明治天皇がこちらでお茶を楽しんだ…そんな光景に思いを馳せるのもいいですね。庭園・茶室に入ることはできませんが、「梅とウグイス」の扉が目印です。
Silently standing to the north of the Shrine Office, you will find this Tea Room. In the 1940's this Tea Room was relocated from Higuchi Honjin, where Emperor Meiji enjoyed tea and stayed while in Mishima, to its current location. Although we cannot enter this Tea Room, it remains an important part of the legacy of Mishima Taisha. Look for the decorative plum blossom and Japanese bush warbler on the entrance door.
ハートマークに見えるこの模様は猪目といいます。猪の目を正面から見るとこの形に見えるということで、そう呼ばれています。古くから建物や小物の装飾に用いられてきました。ハレノヒ編集部は9カ所の猪目を見つけましたよ！みなさんも境内で探してみてくださいね。いくつ見つかるでしょうか？
This heart-shaped architectural feature is known as Inome, or 'The Eye of the Boar'. The name is derived from the fact that it resembles the eye of a boar when seen from the front and has long been used as a decorative feature on buildings as well as accessories and furniture. The Harenohi Team found these nine Inome at Mishima Taisha. How many can you find?
