春が終わり初夏を迎えるころ、わたしたちのまちの中心に流れる源兵衛川に、ホタルの眩い光が飛び交います。その光を放つのは、美しい環境が保たれた水辺を住処として好む「ゲンジボタル」たち。世界に約2000種いるホタルのうち、水中で育つホタルは珍しいと言われています。

ハレノヒ22号は、まちに生きる「ホタル」がテーマ。ホタルが食べるものや、その光に隠された秘密を、皆さんはどれほど知っているでしょうか。孵化した幼虫が蛹化し、飛び立つまでの旅路は、彼らを育むまちの豊かな水辺環境や、まちの人々のサポートが欠かせません。今号では、羽化してから産卵を終えるまで、わずか数日の命といわれるホタルの一生を追いました。
小さな命のきらめきが彩る、初夏のまち。ハレノヒ片手に、源兵衛川で過ごす特別な夜を楽しみましょう。

The silent sparkle of fireflies along Mishima’s Genbe River announces the arrival of summer to the city. These tiny lights in the night sky are the calls of the genji-botaru, one of the 2000 known species of fireflies worldwide. What makes these fireflies unique is that they live out their lives at the water’s edge, flourishing only in pristine, clear-flowing river environments.

In Volume 22 of Harenohi Magazine, we look just beyond the glow of the genji-botaru fireflies to see how they live, what they eat, and learn the secret behind their bioluminescence. Along the way, we follow their lifecycle as they hatch from riverside flora, gorge on freshwater river snails, pupate, and emerge to fly for a short, few days. We also discover that in our modern world, fireflies rely on the kindness and hard work of citizens to make their yearly return. a labor of love that allows these lights to continue to shine. 今号では、緑が爽やかな朝、動物たちが生き生きと活動する午後、穏やかに日が暮れる夕方など、さまざまな時間帯に「楽寿園」を訪れました。園内にある6つの森、23種もの動物たちが暮らす「どうぶつ広場」をはじめ、賑やかな野鳥たち、表情豊かな木々たちの木肌、三島溶岩などにフォーカスをし、その魅力を探ります。ハレノヒを片手に「楽寿園」を巡れば、前よりもっと、この場所を好きになるはず。みなさんにとっての「楽寿園」の好きなところも、ぜひこっそりと教えてくださいね。

Take in a deep breath of fresh, forest air and listen to the calls of birds from above as you walk scenic trails lined with trees rooted firmly in the Mishima lava underfoot. Located just minutes from Mishima station, Rakujuen Park is filled with many happy memories and shares a special place in the hearts of generations of people.
For Volume 21, we visited Rakujuen at various times throughout the day, looking to see a new side of the park we all know and love. We explored the park’s six unique forest groves, went birding to see some of the park’s seasonal visitors, learned to identify trees by the color and texture of their bark, and reintroduced ourselves to our furry friends in the Animal Plaza. 皆さんの記憶に残る絵本は、どんなものがたりでしたか？色や形、主人公のキャラクターは？絵本は、すべてのものごとに、無限の可能性があることをわたしたちに教えてくれます。今号では、三島市立図書館をはじめ、三島のまちで絵本や読み聞かせを広める活動をしている山内知恵子さん、絵本作家のスギヤマカナヨさん、「えほんやさん」代表・絵本作家のえがしらみちこさんなど、まちと絵本に関わる方々にお話を伺いました。
絵本に　無限の可能性があることを知っている大人たちがいるまち、三島。幼い頃から、絵本が身近にある環境で育つまちの子どもたちは、地域の大人に見守られながら、豊かな心を育てています。それは三島の明るい未来につながる、一つのきっかけとなることでしょう。

There is magic to be found in a picturebook. Through unique characters, vivid colors, and imaginative shapes, picturebooks show us a world of infinite possibility, with countless ways to perceive the experiences we encounter. In this issue, we spoke to Chieko Yamauchi who has been promoting storytelling for over 20 years, as well as picture book author Kanayo Sugiyama, representative of Ehon-Ya San and picture book author, Michiko Egashira as well as the staff at Mishima Municipal Library. With their energy and tireless dedication, children in Mishima are surrounded by the wondrous joy of learning and discovery, guiding generations into an even brighter and inspired future.

わたしたちにとって親しみ深い、まちに伝わる民謡「農兵節」。音曲部によって演奏される音楽や唄に合わせ、舞踊部が一糸乱れぬ踊りを披露します。唄の起源は1850年ごろまで遡り、平井源太郎によって今の形へと変化を遂げました。今号では「農兵節」のストーリーを探し、三島農兵節普及会や観光協会など、「農兵節」に携わっている方々にお話をお伺いしました。
衣装や唄、踊りを知る。私たちにとって親しみ深い「農兵節」をさらに掘り下げることで、新しい発見やまちの伝統を考えるきっかけにしていただけると嬉しいです。また、2022年度には実に3年ぶりとなる三嶋大祭りの開催が決定しています。三嶋大社から三島広小路駅に掛け行われる、「農兵節」のパレード。賑やかで特別なまちの空気を、ぜひ味わってくださいね。

Noheibushi is a traditional Mishima folk song and dance whose beginnings can be traced back to the mid-nineteenth century. Its current iteration was popularized by a charismatic Mishima native named Hirai Gentaro who solidified the associated dance and released the song on record in 1934. In Volume 19 of Harenohi Magazine, we talk to the members of the Mishima Noheibushi Promotion Association and well as the Mishima Tourist association to learn about the origins of the song, the dance, and the traditional clothing worn for the performance.
And for the first time since 2019, Noheibushi will be performed at the 2022 Mishima Omatsuri Summer Festival in a parade that will carry the performers from Mishima Taisha Shrine to Mishima Hirokouji Station. Come rediscover the energy of Mishima’s summer season and join in on the traditions and song of our city.

わたしたちのまちや暮らしを見守る、さまざまな企業やお店の「ロゴ」。ハレノヒ18号は、カタチ（シンボルマーク）や文字（ロゴタイプ）などの組み合わせで構成されることが多い「まちのロゴ」がテーマです。
今号ではまちにあるロゴを探しに、外へ。見上げた看板、路地裏に佇む一軒のお店、通り過ぎるバスや車を飾っているものなど、たくさんのロゴに出会いました。
まちにあるさまざまなロゴやそのストーリーに出会うことで、日々の暮らしを楽しむきっかけとなりますように。知ると、気づくと、楽しい。わたしたちの日常を豊かにする、そんな一冊をお届けします。

Proudly illuminated on billboards and storefronts, and emblazoned on buses and cars, logos have become a part of our landscape. In Volume 18 of Harenohi Magazine, we take a close look at the symbols, shapes, and stylized lettering that comprise some of the logos that can be found throughout Mishima and discover the meaning inside.

今号では実際に朝のまちを歩き、早朝の暗い中に灯る店の灯りや、ラジオ体操の音楽が響き渡る三嶋大社、朝日降り注ぐ川沿いを歩いている人たちなど、その道すがら出会った方々にお話を伺いました。朝のまちを歩くからこそ見える・感じる・気づく、普段とは違うまちの一面に出会います。

三島のまちの、朝さんぽ。普段とは違うまちの表情を知ることがわたしたちの日常を変え、このまちをさらに好きになるひとつのきっかけになるかもしれません。

Just how does Mishima greet the morning light? In Volume 17 of Harenohi Magazine, we set our alarms a little earlier than usual and set out before sunrise to witness the sights and sounds of the city as night turns to day. On our pre-dawn travels, the lights from stores, busy preparing for the day’s customers, lit our way. We spoke to joggers and a host of other early birds as the sounds of Radio Exercises echoed from the grounds of Mishima Grand Shrine.

There’s something special about stepping outside in the early morning. We see things in a new light and we’re sure to find yet another reason to fall in love with the city once again. Follow along. It's time to 'Walk in the Mishima Morn.'

そのまちの、おいしいもの。そのまちで、愛されているもの。みなさんは、わたしたちのまち・三島の名物「うなぎ」が、約2,500km離れたマリアナ諸島の海域からスタートする長い旅を終えて、この地にたどりつくことを知っていますか？vol.16では、まちの名物である「うなぎ」をテーマに、彼らの旅をたどります。
今号では、三島のまちで「うなぎ」を提供する、桜家・元祖うなよし・すみの坊の3つのうなぎ専門店からお話を伺いました。

Luxuriously flavorful and decadent, grilled eel cuisine has been a part of life in Mishima for centuries. Walking through these city streets, its sweet and smoky aroma drifting in the air, it is no surprise that unagi is loved by young and old alike.

In Volume 16 of Harenohi Magazine, we explore the world of unagi, a world we discovered to be full of surprise. And it all begins with an unfathomable journey as tiny elvers start their life drifting in the waters of the Mariana Islands, some 2500 km away.

To better understand this famed and enigmatic sea creature, we spoke to the proprietors of three restaurants here in Mishima, each specializing in their original preparation of unagi, Sakuraya, Ganso Unayoshi and Suminobo. Looking inside their world, we saw a new level of dedication to the craft and just may have uncovered a few secrets to unagi perfection. We fell in love with unagi all over again. We hope you do too.

どこかのまちを訪れるとき、その理由はさまざま。まちにある「宿」は、わたしたちの旅を彩るひとつの大切な要素です。それは出会いのきっかけだったり、未来において、大切な思い出の一場面になることも。

Sometimes, all we need to reinvigorate our day is a simple change in scenery and a place to collect our thoughts, and what better place to do so than at a quiet café with your favorite blend. In Volume 14 of Harenohi Magazine, we spoke to Okada Yuji (COFFEE&CO), Miyayama Takuya (fluff coffee plus), Iwase Keiichiro (Iwase Coffee), Mano Mayumi (10-1 Kettle), Kawahira Kazuhide (FERRET COFFEE), Yamazaki Mitsutaka (WEDNESDAY COFFEE STAND), and Takatsuka Yoshiyuki (rivière) about their passion for coffee and how they get to see the city, in a cup.

Vol.13では、わたしたちの身近にいる"小さななかまたち"に着目しました。彼らが持つさまざまなチャームポイントを知り、出会うことで、今までよりももっと近くにその存在を感じることができるでしょう。
今号では、中郷温水池や清住緑地をはじめとする、まちの中の自然豊かな場所に赴きました。キョロキョロと周りを見回し、声をたどって頭上を見上げ。優雅に泳ぐ姿・凛とした立ち姿。

By the waterside, we see their long yellow legs, their lacy feathers and striking eyes. In the trees, we hear their voices as they announce our arrival and the changing of the seasons. In Harenohi Volume 13, we visit our feathered and furry neighbors to learn more about their lives and the charming features that make each one unique.
We walked through wooded areas and wetlands around the city including Nakazato Onsuichi and Kiyosumi Green Area to watch our friends swooping and swimming against a backdrop of spring-fed streams and blue skies. We were amazed at not only the variety of wild animals that make Mishima their home but at their proximity to our daily lives. We hope that when you read Vol. 13, you'll look up, look down, look all around and rediscover that our little neighbors are closer than you might think.
