The musical accompaniment at traditional religious ceremonies was a known as Ohayashi. 450 years ago, a dancer at Mishima Shrine composed such Ohayashi, called Mishima Bayashi, that he taught to youths in the area. From its origins as music in honor of the gods, we see the evolution of Shagiri, a tradition that continues to this day. Once with its future in question, and after struggling to overcome a series of major setbacks, Shagiri was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Mishima City in 1965, and by 1991, had been honored with the same designation from Shizuoka Prefecture. Shagiri truly is an irreplaceable part of the culture of Mishima.
